Exercise: Workflow 1

The work flow for my exercise was as follows:
  1. A baby photo shoot in the parents home
  2. The shoot was time limted as the baby wouldn't endure endless poses
  3. The images would be uploaded onto Lightroom for review
  4. Unsuitable images would be deleted
  5. Improvements would be made and specific images of suitable quality selected
  6. Suitable images would be selected and burned onto the disc and given to the family as a gift
So...how did it go?

  1. I timed my arrival to coincide with the nap time of the baby who was 3 months old. I allowed time to set up my tripod, laptop and a soft blanket draped over a poufe, I'd also take some accessories (fairy wings) which I'd hoped to use.
  2. Initially I had taken my laptop in order to use 'live view' as I find this useful to see what the image will look like, this was really difficult to use as each time I took an image and waited for live view to get back to being ready for the next shot therefore I quickly gave up using this metho as I was missing opportunities and with the time being limited I changed to hand holding the camera and not using live view which turned out to be much better as the baby moved quite a lot. Learning point - be wary of using live view and tripod with a moving object namely a very wriggly baby!
  3. The lack of background quickly became an issue as I didnt have the distance or the light (didn't have a flash gun at this stage), I had someone holding the blanket up behind the baby but this looked too wrinkly. I ended up taking quite a lot of close up images to get over this problem. Learning point - look into getting a back ground if doing any more shoots like this and purchase a flash gun.
  4. The photo shoot took around an hour which was roughly the right length of time as the baby was starting to become unsettled
  5. Uploading the images onto the computer was straight forward, performing a back up at the end of the process advisable as the subject wouldn't be impressed to have to repeat the process.
  6. Unsuitable images were deleted, this was a fairly quick process, obvious ones were deleted with 2 clicks, dubious images were zoomed in on with one click to see how sharp they were, any not sharp were deleted immediately.
  7. Selected images were burned onto a disc, as I was using a new laptop this took a couple of attempts as I'd not gone through the procedure before and hadn't burned them onto the disc when I first thought I had. I gave the disc to the family as a thank you.
