Assignment 5 - research

Ray Billingham - ray's a laugh (£650!)
This book is a documentary style based on Ray's alcoholic father, images show a deprived childhood. Images are taken in the home, doing ordinary every day things, the items in the room are very interesting, the images are fascinating, moving and quite sad but also show a certain strength of the subjects.

Nick Waplington - 'the living room' (£150 - £200!)
(add in)

Looking at the approach of Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans:
  • non-smiling
  • some facing straight on - formal
  • symbolism - empty plate, sparse items in room
  • groups in their best clothes - proud
  • coping with hardship, children leaning into parents
  • living situations - hanging out washing, pots and pans
  • men at work - real life
